My practice:
Personal setbacks and conflictual relationships are common problems that we all can face at some point in our lives. I have been a therapist for 20 years and have worked with individuals with such issues as depression and mood swings, grief and loss, anxiety and worries, addictions, anger management, intimacy and sexual difficulties, and divorce adjustment.
For couples I provide a format to discuss difficult topics in a more safe and constructive environment. I help couples improve communication that enhances closeness, deepens understanding and reduces reactivity.
Sessions include the keys of good expression and listening, family of origin issues, working with emotions and identifying needs, and creating new goals and rituals.
My approach is respectful and compassionate. I use clinical strategies that have worked, along with clients' strengths and resources, to find solutions.
My background and experience: I earned a PhD from Virginia Tech's Marriage and Family Therapy program, an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from Appalachian State University, and a BA from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1987. My doctoral dissertation explored the new concept of attachment injuries in couples relationships.
I have been in practice for over 20 years and work with individuals, couples and families. I have a wide range of training from various models including Bowen Therapy, Couples Communication, Couple Development, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Process Experiential Psychotherapy, Relationship Enhancement, Sexual Addictions, and Solution-Focused Therapy.
I am currently an associate faculty member at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family where I am director of the Continuing Studies program. From 2004-2019, I was an adjunct faculty member at Virginia Tech's Human Development/ Marriage and Family Therapy program in Falls Church, Virginia. I have taught Couples Therapy, Systems Theory, Lifespan Development, Crisis Intervention and a course I developed called Emotion and Family Therapy. I have publications in the area of Emotionally Focused Therapy, and have presented on various topics at conferences here and abroad.
